We Demand Immigration Reform Now
This demonstration in support of HR 1511 was held in Clovis on Sept. 1, 2023

Demanding ā€œImmigration Reform Nowā€ demonstrations were held in Clovis and Bakersfield at the offices of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (Rā€“Bakersfield). These rallies were held in support of HR 1511 and called on the Speaker to bring meaningful immigration reform to the floor for a vote.

The rally took place in front of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s office in Clovis.Ā  The plan was to hand in petitions in support of HR 1511, but the office was locked down and nobody would open the door. All photos by Mike Rhodes.

What is HR 1511? In an article in The Nation, David Bacon explained the importance of HR 1511:

ā€œRenewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929,ā€ is breathtaking in its simplicity. It just changes a date: January 1, 1972. Today, anyone who entered the US without a visa before that date can apply for legal permanent residenceā€”the ā€œgreen card.ā€ After five years as a legal resident, this person can then apply for US citizenship. This registry process is contained in Section 249 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, and the date has been changed four timesā€”from 1921 to 1924, 1940, 1948, and finally 1972.
