The Madera May Day Committee announced on April 21 the celebration of International Workers’ Day on May 1 starting at 5 p.m. The celebration will include a 40-minute march through the city streets.
“We haven’t had a May Day celebration in Madera for a long time, and we believe this is the time to take to the streets, to show our numbers and show that there is a community in Madera, a community of farmworkers, domestic workers and workers in other industries that are part of our economy and our society,” said Brenda Ordaz, local representative of CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles).

“And many of these workers are undocumented—currently being vilely attacked by the Trump administration.”
Ordaz was one of the presenters during the press conference where details of the May Day celebration were announced.
The Madera May Day Committee is made up of local organizations and activists such as the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), the Binational Center for Oaxacan Indigenous Development (CBDIO), CHIRLA, the Latinos Madera Club, the UFW Foundation and Madera City Council Member Elsa Mejía.
