Why Rudy Salas Is the Leader Latinos Need

As Latinos in California, we know what it means to fight for our families, dignity and future. We work hard, show up for each other and push for opportunities to make life better for all. I’m endorsing Rudy Salas for Congress in District 22 because he has lived through our same struggles, understands our challenges and has proven that he will stand up for us in words and action.

He isn’t just another politician. He’s one of us. Born and raised in California, Rudy grew up working alongside his family in fields and construction. He knows the daily grind, the sacrifices and the perseverance that define the Latino experience in this state.

In 2010, Rudy made history as the first Latino ever elected to Bakersfield’s City Council in its 112-year history. As a State Assembly member, he supported policies that create good-paying jobs, expand access to healthcare and ensure that our children have the resources they need to succeed.

Rudy has been a fierce advocate for fair and just immigration reform. He understands that immigration reform isn’t just about legal status, but about dignity, economic stability and the future of our communities.

Salas has also vowed to seek more benefits for the working class as a champion with a comprehensive plan for worker protection, affordable healthcare and educational opportunities.

A true champion for our community, Salas will ensure that our voices are heard loud and clear in Washington, D.C.

What’s at Stake?

This is a one issue election: Saving democracy. If we don’t accomplish that, there will be no opportunity to address any other issue.

We should heed the words of Steve Earle, who last month at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass introduced his version of “This Land Is Your Land” with the following comment:

“The main thing you have to remember is, definitely vote. Don’t sit this one out. It’s too important. Don’t waste your vote, cause it’s math. It’s not an expression of your political heart. It’s f—ing math, and there’s a consequence.

“For this election, it’s important to remember that your ballot is secret. That’s a fundamental component of our democracy.

“You don’t have to tell your neighbors who you voted for. You do not have to tell your wife who you voted for. And, most importantly, in this particular election, you don’t have to tell your husband who you voted for.”

Then, after fending off voter suppression, Trump, MAGA, local militias, right-wing state governments, multiple lower court challenges and the Supreme Court, let’s work like hell to get a Harris administration to focus on a progressive agenda that returns America to the people.

More Perfect and Just Union

African Americans have believed in the promise of America since arriving to the New World, North America, in 1526. Prior to getting our full citizenship after the Civil War, we have always fought for our civil and economic freedoms.

Once gaining citizenship, our fight for freedom has always been to create a more perfect multiracial, multi-ethnic, multicultural, multi-blended and multi-gender democratic America.

The fact that a multicultural African American woman is running for president under the banner of the Democratic Party clearly says that African Americans are not leaving America. We are still fighting to create a more perfect and just union.

Mural Archiving

I have suggested that journalists and photographers archive the murals in Fresno as cultural landmarks with the emphasis of the perceived whitewashing or defacing of art all over the city. We have lost many murals to them being painted over by building owners or the City [of Fresno]. There has also been a significant depreciation of value of the mural art by graffiti, seemingly ruining their cultural artifacts. I find this saddening. Having studied art history in college, art is a propellant in shaping society and culture and has been used to artifact time.

Middle East

The first proposal for the two-state solution, that is/was a separate Jewish and Arab state, was made by the British Peer Commission report in 1937.

It is long overdue for both Palestinians and Israelis to return to this proposal and adopt it.

To those in Ireland and around the world who side with the terrorist organizations in southern Lebanon, Gaza and the Houthis in Yemen, what would your position be on the Israeli/terrorist war if it could be clearly shown that all three of these organizations have in their manifesto and ideology the removal of the State of Israel from the face of the earth and the killing of Jews worldwide? Would your position change?

Israel is now fighting a war on three fronts. It must stop and stop immediately. Otherwise, the planet is possibly entering a third world war.
