Where Are Women’s Rights?

Where Are Women’s Rights?
Editor Eduardo Stanley

When the United States invaded Afghanistan alleging its involvement in 9/11 (which was not proven, besides housing Osama Bin Laden, supposedly the leader of the attacks), it gave the impression that besides getting the “bad guys” we would help Afghanistan become more democratic and therefore “free.”

And for this, a lot of emphasis was placed on the treatment of women. U.S. mainstream media expressed horror on this issue and produced several stories about girls completely covered, obeying their parents and later their husbands, and studying religion only under the guidance of mullahs.

The United States tried to change this situation during the invasion of Afghanistan (2001–2021), however, the achievements were limited as the United States controlled a small portion of the country.

Today, Afghani girls’ and women’s situation is the same as before the invasion.

Well, now this is what we are seeing every day in the United States: The “In God We Trust” phrase placed in city halls and county boards, the 10 Commandments prominently displayed in schools, the banning of “dangerous” books, and on and on.

Our country is going full speed into a dictatorship, and religion is facilitating that. Also in the works: returning women’s social and political conditions to the 19th century by not letting them work or vote. The current administration is also demanding women respect their husbands. Of course, Republicans initiated the movement to ban abortion in any circumstances—even persecuting doctors and other people for supporting these women.

In other words, we have become the same as the country we invaded a few years ago.

The present scenario isn’t just bad and dangerous for women, the entire society is in jeopardy.

Will we wake up one day?

Till next month (if…).
