Reactions on the Rise

The social tensions and uncertainty generated by the current administration seem to know no bounds. In addition to feuding with countries once considered friends and allies, massive layoffs of workers are creating chaos that is difficult to measure now.

Budget cuts in government agencies will severely affect public health, education and social services. There is also an assault on public universities and civil rights. And a systematic attack on free and critical journalism.

This administration is trying to eliminate what has been achieved after decades of struggle and sacrifice. The current authorities want to return to the years before the 1960s. And they want to erase history.

These are difficult and dangerous times.

Locally, we have not yet felt the full impact. But it will come.

Or rather, it is coming: Fresno County Supervisor Garry Bredefeld called for the elimination of DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) language from County job applications. In Porterville, the City Council is preparing to pass resolutions directly targeting the trans community. And more.

There are no signs of where the line is. This must be set by society as a whole. There are signs of a reaction. There is hope.

Till next month.
