Elsa Mejía, Editor

By Elsa Mejía

Dear Readers,

It is an honor to be named the editor of the Community Alliance and a privilege to be working alongside such a diverse team of inspired and dedicated individuals.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Elsa Mejía and I am a Central Valley native, born in Fresno and raised in Madera. I can trace my yearning for a compelling story as far back as my toddler years when I was sitting on my mother’s lap learning how to read Spanish. That is because, as the daughter of immigrants from México, español is my native tongue and the first language I learned to read and write.

As years went by, my passion for the the printed word only intensified as I learned English. I was the young girl who collected newspapers and watched newscasts in awe. My heroes were journalists like Univison’s Jorge Ramos and María Elena Salinas. In school, I took every opportunity to be involved in anything involving writing. That is what led me to land my first job as a local reporter for my hometown’s daily when I was 17 years old and college bound.

But I could have only imagined in the classroom all that I learned out in the field actually doing the job. That is in no way meant to discredit the value of the education I received from my professors in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Fresno State, however, as I was, am and will always be a proud Bulldog.

Through this new endeavor, I look forward to meeting the many faces, but more than that, the stories of readers, like yourself, whom by simply picking up this copy have already demonstrated your keen interest for insightful and meaningful local journalism. Having met and sat down for dinner with the founder and former editor of Community Alliance, Mike Rhodes, I already know I have huge shoes to fill and I am ready to do that because remember, no one can tell our stories better than ourselves. That is why I invite all, and especially the youth in our communities, to step forward and expose all that matters to you. You are the voice of the progressive movement and only you can shape its future.

Queridos lectores,
