When the Dark Becomes Even Darker

A few years ago, no one would have imagined that the President of our country would be someone with so many charges against him, with so many bankruptcies (four) and with his most influential minister being a South African openly in favor of racism, who also applauds and promotes political parties and leaders sympathetic to Nazism. In addition, this minister wants to establish the economic policy and the moral agenda of our society.

Trump and Musk are implementing massive layoffs of federal workers, which implies significantly increasing the number of unemployed. They also want to deport millions of undocumented immigrants instead of modifying our immigration laws. Let us remember that thousands of undocumented immigrants are the ones who harvest our agricultural fields. And who will do this work? We do not know, but what we do know is that with fewer agricultural workers, fresh products will become more expensive.

The new administration is also increasing taxes on imported products, which will obviously make those products more expensive. All of these measures will lead to more unemployment, higher prices and increasing the cost of living in general. The exact opposite of “Make America Great Again.”

At the local level, some Democratic leaders act like little apprentices of Trump/Musk. Rep. Jim Costa (D–Fresno)—like other representatives from the Valley—approved a law called the Laken Riley Act, which further criminalizes undocumented immigrants. Costa seems to forget the immigrant origin of his ancestors.

But there is more to this law than immigration: It seeks to dominate, humiliate and exploit workers even more. Because those who make America Great are not these weak politicians but rather those who work despite the harsh social and labor conditions.

Till next month.
