Dolores Huerta Foundation – February 2019

DHF Youth Participate in Civic Action During Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Weekend

The Dolores Huerta Foundation (DHF) and youth from our Youth and Family Civic Engagement Initiative (“Youth Initiative”) engaged in multiple events over the weekend celebrating the principles of unity and justice in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The DHF Youth Initiative prepared posters and speeches for the Bakersfield and Fresno women’s marches held on Jan. 19. Eighteen of our youth participated across Kern and Fresno counties, and one of our Bakersfield youth, Brenda Hidalgo, delivered a speech at the Women’s March in Bakersfield representing DHF and the Youth Initiative to a crowd of thousands of attendees where she highlighted the importance of youth getting involved in their communities and defying the “stereotypes that youth live on their cellphones.”

In addition, 12 of our youth celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr., Day by giving back and helping make a difference in their communities. The youth joined the 3rd Annual MLK Day Cleanup in the community of Lamont The event took place on Jan. 21 where they met at the Seventh Day Adventist Church. This event was in collaboration with the Greater Lamont Chamber of Commerce, the Lamont Elementary School District, the Vineland School District, the Self-Help Federal Credit Union, Lamont Auto Repair, the Arvin High School FFA, Assembly Member Rudy Salas, Kern County General Services, AmeriCorps, the Lamont Hispanic SDA Church and others.
