Guitar Festival
Fresno State’s School of Music is hosting a Guitar Festival on April 11 and 12 at the Wahlberg Recital Hall on the Fresno State campus. The concerts begin at 8 p.m. both days, and tickets start at $15.
On April 11, Misael Barraza-Diaz is featured along with a special performance by Ana Maria lordache and Thomas Patterson. Barraza-Diaz is a Mexican guitarist who has won multiple international competitions in classical guitar. He has also mastered the art of flamenco guitar, an area in which he is most active today. His hunger and devotion toward the andalucian artform led him to study in Spain several times throughout his career.
On April 12, Ricardo Marlow is featured with a special performance by Corey Whitehead. Marlow is one of the most sought-after solo flamenco guitarists and flamenco group accompanists in the United States. His brilliant technique, lyrical compositions and masterful interpretations of flamenco are unsurpassed. His percussive style of playing is highly sought after by local flamenco artists.
Dr. Corey E. Whitehead, a professor at Fresno State, was one of five flamenco guitarists in the world chosen by the legendary Manolo Sanlúcar to receive a full scholarship to study in Córdoba at “La forma y naturaleza de la guitarra flamenca”—the only guitarist from the United States ever chosen for this scholarship. He also composes flamenco music.
