CARMEN AND CHIA MIX MAGIC

By Dixie Salazar; just published by Black Opal Books. This young adult fantasy novel deals with immigration issues and conflict resolution with Hmong-American and Mexican-American girls as the bookā€™s heroines. The familiar setting of Fresno and the ambitious attempt to combine a discussion of immigration rights, the suffering of families who are divided by deportation, and traditional cultural beliefs and myths of both the Hmong and Chicano heritages in a swirling fantasy will interest WILPF readers.

2014 PASTORS FOR PEACE CARAVAN TO CUBA

Fresno Center for Nonviolence and Fresno WILPF combine to sponsor local participation in the IFCO Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba. Leni V. Reeves, chair of our Cuba Solidarity Committee, coordinated the Caravan route that went from Pocatello, Idaho, to McAllen, Texas, and drove a box-truck of aid through Mexico to the Tampico docks, for shipment to Cuba. A few Caravan experiences are in a separate article in this issue. For more information, check out www.ifconews.org/.
