Every year on Sept. 21, the International Day of Peace is observed around the world. It was established in 1981 through a unanimous UN resolution and declared by the General Assembly as a day devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”

Central Valley residents stood boldly, proudly and courageously on the corner of Nees and Blackstone avenues, as they have so many times before, to observe the day in Fresno. An array of colorful and large signs were created to bring the same message to passing pedestrians and motorists: We want peace not war. Participants also demanded an end to the U.S. military buildup, overseas bases and wars waged abroad by the U.S. government on taxpayers’ dollars.

The hour-long demonstration was organized by Peace Fresno, and participants dined at a nearby restaurant following the event.
