Around 25 gig workers came out to the lawn in front of Fresno City Hall on March 25 for a press conference to support SB 1246, which would regulate autonomous vehicles statewide. State Senator Dave Cortese (D–San Jose) authored the bill.
Mustafa El-Amin, a member of the Gig Workers Union and SEIU, supports SB 1246. “I spend most of my waking hours driving on the roads,” he said, “and as more autonomous vehicles become more common, we need clear rules to keep our streets safe for everyone and ensure companies take responsibility for when things go wrong.”
Autonomous vehicles, El-Amin said, “[are] not in Fresno yet, but time will tell. Innovation moves fast, and companies are not going to be slow to roll it out if they have the opportunity.”
