Cool Compost

Have you noticed the recent weather extremes? If you have a lawn or garden, you can help fight climate change by drawing down atmospheric carbon and locking it in the soil. A recent study from the University of California found that spreading a thin layer of compost—about 1/4 to 1/2 inch—on uncultivated land can effectively draw down carbon.

With rain or irrigation, the carbon goes deeper into the soil, bringing water along with it. As a result, the soil retains moisture and becomes more fertile. A standard one square foot bag of compost, costing about $3, can cover an area of 48 square feet when you spread it at 1/4 inch thick.

We’re already doing many things to fight climate change, but this 15-year study shows that only spreading a little compost on all the open lands around the world—8.6 billion acres—could start to cool the planet. Even a small amount of compost on the right land can help. Let’s make every day Earth Day!

Diversity of Artemis II Crew

Charlie Kirk once said that “If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, boy, I hope he’s qualified.” Only a racist white supremacist would make a statement like that. Racist Charlie Kirk must be rolling over in his grave.

The successful and history-making crew of Artemis II, which was approved by President Joe Biden, was a diverse and competent crew. The crew’s international composition was two white guys, one from Canada, one Black male and one white female. This crew is definitely an example of DEI: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The qualifications of Victor Glover (Pilot): 24 combat missions and 3,500 flight hours (about six years of flying experience as a combat pilot in the U.S. military) and three master’s degrees. He is now the first Black man to travel beyond low Earth orbit.

I wonder if the crew for Artemis III, which will be approved by President Donald Trump, will be an all-American white heterosexual Christian male crew? This crew composition would be consistent with Trump’s racist and sexist views.

This crew, I would identify as WEI: White, Entitled and Incompetent!

This would be a crew that Charlie Kirk would approve of.
