The CineCulture film series is provided as a service to Fresno State students, faculty and staff, and the broader community, at no charge. CineCulture features thought-provoking movies, each accompanied by engaging post-screening dialogues led by film contributors or subject matter specialists.

CineCulture is offered as a three-unit academic course (MCJ 179) in the Media, Communications and Journalism Department coordinated by Dr. Mary Husain.

Readers of the Community Alliance have seen the insightful and relevant films offered by CineCulture listed in our Peace and Social Justice Calendar for years.

However, this innovative and rewarding program recently learned that its budget is being cut.

“Recently, I was notified that CineCulture’s budget will be cut by approximately 70%,” lamented Husain.

“Much appreciated grants from Associated Students in the past have gone toward securing performance rights for films (required for community screenings), guest director/artists’ honorariums, travel and hotel expenses.

“During these challenging times, the films and filmmakers we invite not only educate and inspire us but, as Harry Belafonte would remind us, ‘Artists are the gatekeepers of truth.’

“My hope is that, together, we can gather the support needed to continue this vital, creative international exchange program.”

Support the CineCulture film series and director visits by making a tax-free donation either by visiting cineculture.csufresno.edu/ (detail the process) or attending a CineCulture screening and submitting an envelope on the table in the back of the auditorium, and either leave it in the basket or return it by mail.

“Every gift makes a big difference,” notes Husain.

Screenings are held at 5:30 p.m. on Fridays in the Peters Education Center Auditorium (west of Save Mart Center in the Student Recreation Center Building). All films screened on campus are free and open to the public. Parking is free (not enforced) after 4 p.m. on Fridays.

The program runs under the Fresno State College of Arts and Humanities and serves as a vital community bridge for cultural education.
