In San Diego, nine activists completed six days of a hunger strike outside the Mission Valley Hilton Hotel on April 10—the day demonstrations took place across the United States demanding immigration reform. Hunger strikers were protesting the firing of 14 of the hotel’s workers, after Evolution Hospitality, the company operating the Hilton franchise, told them that it had used the government’s E-Verify database to determine that they didn’t have legal immigration status.

Fresno has become Ground Zero for the war on labor in California. Despite the success that anti-labor forces have had recently in the Midwest, in California we turned back Prop 32 last year. Prop 32 was a blatant attempt to make it difficult for unions …[Read the details]

Outsourcing Essential City Services Detrimental to Fresno’s Future

By Les Kimber

Attempts by Mayor Ashley Swearengin to privatize the city’s solid waste department as a quick fix to the city’s budget problems are shortsighted and irresponsible. The city’s solid waste department is one of the most efficient and successful departments in the entire City of Fresno.

The fact that the department is self-supporting and has a $16.8 million reserve is evidence of how well the residents of Fresno have been served by those who work every day to provide this essential service. Not only are all costs related to providing trash service completely covered by the rates …[Read the details]

March of the Butterflies: Immigration Reform 2013

By Jamie San Andres

“We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us!” chanted some of the masses last year at the May 1 march. Some may ask, what do the members of the immigrant community mean when they claim that the border crossed them? The fact of the matter is that the United States, among other global powers facing waves of immigration, are facing the consequences of historic and current international policies that aimed to serve the economic interests of global powers and have disrupted and/or destroyed the political and economic autonomy and independence of southern hemispheric countries.

The Truth about the Fulton Mall

To call the Fulton Mall a “mall” is misleading. It’s truly an urban oasis. A melting pot. It’s the only place in Fresno where the cultures get to meet and interact. As well as being a breathing space for a bit of relief from the noise of traffic, it’s a park in the middle of the inner city; trees, benches, fountains and mosaics. It’s a microcosm of what America’s dream is of being.

My name is Ian McDonald. I am 61 years old and live at the Californian Hotel. I’ve lived here five …[Read the details]
