Where Do We Go from Here?

The Trump administration appears to be sinking the country into further darkness and indignity. The unbridled attempt to reverse the results of the November elections in some states—particularly Wisconsin and Georgia—with the illusion of maintaining power, no matter what, looks like a grim game played by a choir of bootlickers. Even Senator Lindsey Graham (R–S.C.) was part of this unusual behavior suggesting that Georgia’s electoral authorities toss “some” ballots—obviously ballots for Trump’s opponent.

Trump refuses to accept the electoral results—his defeat.

The most remarkable aspect of this incredible political circus is that it seems Trump’s motivation is to save his own ego by convincing his followers that he lost because of fraud.

However, he also lost in 2016 by three million votes to Hillary Clinton but got to the White House because of the Electoral College. This time, he lost to Joe Biden by more than six million votes and the Electoral College. And there is no proof of fraud. Republicans sued in several states trying to overturn the electoral results alleging fraud, but the claims were rejected due to lack of proof.

This embarrassing situation besmirches even more the muddy political climate of the nation. The Trump administration is discrediting our democracy and those who refuse to be part of his circus, particularly the media.

Never before has having an independent, critical and professional news media been so important. The Community Alliance newspaper has demonstrated over the past two decades its relevance to our community. To continue with our mission, we are asking our readership for support. This is why we are inviting you to participate in our 2020 annual fundraiser—a virtual fundraiser given the pandemic—to take place on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. via Zoom. Please see this article for details.

Finally, a reflection.

What has happened to some of our local leaders? What do they have in mind? A few days back, it was reported that Fresno Mayor-Elect Jerry Dyer, Fresno County Supervisor Steve Brandau and developer Darius Assemi got Covid-19 from attending a post-election party on Nov. 3. None of them enforced the basic rules recommended by public health officials: wear a mask and keep social distance.

This behavior is irresponsible not only because they can spread the virus but also because it is a bad example for society. This is not the kind of leadership we want or we need in Fresno.

During this election, we noticed some positive changes in the Central Valley, for example, more political involvement from young voters and people of color. But as we can see with our leaders’ behavior, more changes are needed.
