Fresno State Student Government First to Pass a No Drones Resolution

An interesting convergence of interests has emerged, with both the right and the left agreeing that they don’t want to see drones patrolling our streets or engaging in extrajudicial executions. Conservative Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) shook up politics as usual when he asked if it would be possible to have “someone eating at a cafe in Boston, or New York, and a Hellfire missile comes raining in on them.”

Conservative Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) shook up politics as usual when he asked if it would be possible to have “someone eating at a cafe in Boston, or New York, and a Hellfire missile comes raining in on them.”

Now that drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have become a common news item locally and nationally, saying Fresno State University and drones in the same …[Read the details]

Reinstating Merced High School Transportation: Bus Cuts Foster Inequality Among Students and Employees

By Jeff Freitas

Last April, the Merced Union High School District (MUHSD) Board of Trustees cut school bus service for high school students living within a five-mile radius of the school, eliminating 15 full-time driver jobs to reportedly save $1.25 million annually. District officials said that the deep, immediate transportation cuts were necessary in case Proposition 30 failed to reinstate state education funding last November.

On April 9, women will have caught up with the pay that men made by Dec. 31. Despite all the efforts through the years to equalize pay for equal work women still lag behind, making only 82 cents to a man’s dollar. It is time to take a look at the state of economics in this nation of opportunity.

We see our infrastructure crumbling and refuse to consider proven solutions. Have we forgotten how we pulled out of the Great Depression of 1929–1930? We still benefit from projects—buildings, bridges, parks, etc.—undertaken to provide …[Read the details]

Pay for Play Good for the Kids?

By Lloyd G. Carter

Loathe to propose new taxes, school districts around California, including the Clovis Unified School District (CSUD), are using bond measures to raise capital, triggering criticism that the school districts are not fully disclosing the “pay to play” profiteers—financial institutions, developers and construction companies—who finance school elections and then are rewarded with fat contracts or profits from school construction, bond underwriting and sales.

Former Assembly Member Chris Norby of Fullerton says it is not technically illegal for school districts or contributors to engage in such activities, but they are clearly a conflict of interest. The Republican …[Read the details]

Parents and Doctors Sue Clovis School District over Sex Education

The sex education lawsuit against the Clovis Unified School District is the first of its kind in California.

By Community Alliance Staff

The sex education lawsuit against the Clovis Unified School District is the first of its kind in California.

In August, parents and physicians sued the Clovis Unified School District over its high school abstinence-only-until-marriage sex education. The lawsuit charges that the district is violating California law and putting teens’ health at risk by teaching students misinformation and denying them critical instruction about condoms and contraception.

The lawsuit is brought by two parents in the district, the American Academy of Pediatrics California District IX (AAP) and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network (GSA Network). …[Read the details]
